Stony Brook defensive backs coach Lyle Hemphill has been promoted to defensive coordinator, head football coach Chuck Priore announced on Tuesday.

Hemphill replaces Rob Neviaser, who resigned to accept a position at Bowling Green.

"For the past two seasons, Rob has helped us set the benchmark of Stony Brook defense," Priore said. The promotion of Lyle will help us maintain consistency. I'm excited about the level of energy and passion Lyle will bring as our new coordinator."

Stony Brook is joining CAA Football this season, and Hemphill has extensive experience in the conference, serving two different stints with Delaware.

He will coordinate a defense that returns six starters, including senior linebacker Jawara Dudley, a two-time all-conference selection.

Stony Brook had a 10-3 record this past season, earning a share of the Big South Conference title and reaching the FCS playoff second round.
