  A few years ago, I had a similar experience while food shopping in a suburb of Sydney, Australia. In that case, I was required to insert two $1 coins to remove the shopping cart from the queue. The procedure was the same as described for southwest Fresno in that the deposit was returned upon replacement of the cart.

  Initially, I was irritated in that I did not have the proper change. Other shoppers, obviously aware of the need for the deposit, had the proper coins on hand and quickly secured their carts and began their shopping excursion.
