Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) made U.S. biathlon team history on Feb. 14, winning silver in the 20-kilometer individual event at the 2013 IBU World Championships in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. The finish marked Burke's first-career world championships medal and the first for a U.S. athlete in 26 years. The U.S. men finished 12th in the 4x7.5K, while the women finished 11th in the relay. Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) added a 13th-place finish in the men's 12.5K pursuit.
TRIPLE THREAT TED
Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) became the first man to win three gold medals in a single world championships event in 45 years when he captured the giant slalom, super combined and super-G titles at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held Feb. 5-17, in Schladming, Austria. Teenage teammate Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) won gold in the slalom, while Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) won the giant slalom.
BOBSLED & SKELETON
Noelle Pikus-Pace (Orem, Utah) and Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) finished first and second at the women's skeleton 2014 Olympic test event on Feb. 16 in Rzhanaya Polyana, Russia. Meanwhile, Elana Meyers (Douglasville, Ga.) and Aja Evans (Chicago, Ill.) captured silver on the Olympic track in the women's bobsled. John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished fourth in the men's skeleton, and the four-man bobsled team of Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah), Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass.), Justin Olsen (San Antonio, Texas) and Curt Tomasevicz (Shelby, Neb.) placed 11th.
CURLING
Team Erika Brown won the 2013 USA Curling National Championships in an extra end on Feb. 16 in Green Bay, Wis. Erika Brown (Oakville, Ontario), Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Jessica Schultz (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Ann Swisshelm (Chicago, Ill.) will now compete for the 2013 World Women's Championship. On the men's side, Team Brady Clark captured the national title. Brady Clark (Seattle, Wash.), Sean Beighton (Seattle, Wash.), Darren Lehto (Seattle, Wash.), Phillip Tilker (Seattle, Wash.) and Steve Lundeen (Seattle, Wash.) will represent the U.S. at the 2013 Ford World Men's Championship.
FENCING
National team spots were on the line at the 2013 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships on Feb. 15-18 in Baltimore. Ariel Simmons (Bellaire, Texas) captured the junior men's individual epee title, Iman Blow (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the junior women's individual foil and Lillian Chu (Saratoga, Calif.) won the cadet women's individual saber. Also victorious during the weekend were Amanda Sirico (Bowie, Md.; junior women's individual epee), Peter Pak (Roslyn, N.Y.; junior men's individual saber), Thomas Dudey (Bellaire, Texas; cadet men's individual foil), Claudia Kulmacz (Upper Saddle River, N.J.; junior women's individual saber), Quinn Crum (Providence, R.I.; cadet women's individual foil) and Clinton Rodell (Annandale, Va.; cadet men's individual epee).
GYMNASTICS
Jazzy Kerber (Highland Park, Ill.) took home gold in the senior division all- around of the Rhythmic Challenge on Feb. 18 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Aliya Protto (Culver City, Calif.) captured silver while Laura Zeng (Libertyville, Ill.) was crowned champion of the junior division.
ICE HOCKEY
After splitting 2-0 decisions with Canada on Feb. 14-15, the U.S. National Sled Team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to win the three-game series with a 2-1 victory over Canada on Feb. 16 at the Canadian International Hockey Academy Arena in Rockland, Ontario. Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) and Joshua Sweeney (Phoenix, Ariz.) provided the scoring for the U.S. in the deciding game.
