Enter the Warzone, crunchier than petrified Corn Flakes.

-- Ricky Manning told a local radio host that he got cut loose as Edison High football coach because of text messages to a 16-year-old student that were "misinterpreted."

Haven't seen the texts in question, but we have a feeling school administrators didn't need Sacagawea to tell them what he meant.

-- Speaking with KMJ's Alexan Balekian, the former NFL cornerback claimed the texts were about concession sales.

Maybe they were. But in this day and age, a 32-year-old football coach should not be texting a girl half his age. Even if it's about something really important, like how much to charge for nachos.

-- Kudos to Fresno State for pulling together Saturday's tribute to coach Jim Sweeney on such short notice.

And don't be surprised if Sweeney's passing serves as a catalyst that re-energizes the fan base.

"I've seen so many faces that I haven't seen in such a long time," longtime booster Harry Gaykian said. "People that stopped going to games. Maybe they'll start coming back."

-- Trent Dilfer (no notes) was so polished, Lorenzo Neal so passionate and Washington State Athletic Director Bill Moos so hilarious with his Sweeney impersonations.

But the most touching moment came when Peg Sweeney related a story about a talk she and her father had about reincarnation.

"He said, 'Then that's what I believe in. And I'm going to come back as a football coach.' "

-- For the second time in two games, the Fresno State basketball team let a double-digit lead slip through its fingers.

The troubling part is that no one was surprised.

-- We'll say this for second-year coach Rodney Terry: The man can recruit, and his players battle on defense.

But on offense, the Bulldogs do more standing around than a Caltrans road crew.

-- Hard to believe a Division I team could average fewer than nine assists per game.

Perhaps someone should remind Fresno State that basketball is a team sport.

-- Let LeBron James finish his career, or at least get closer to the end, before revving up the Michael Jordan comparisons.

LeBron might have fewer rings than Jordan (or Kobe Bryant), but we doubt either of those guys could've taken that Cavs team to the Finals.

-- Brandon Belt raised some eyebrows when he said, "All I can say is, you can't buy chemistry," about the big-spending Dodgers.

Tell that to Melky Cabrera, Alex Rodriguez and all those Biogenesis clients.

-- For no particular reason: Bob Glazebrook

-- Hey, Bob Arum. Why not have Jose Ramirez fight in the Valley?

You could put him up against a tomato can and still sell a boatload of tickets.

-- Wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 776 BC, but the IOC would rather you watch synchronized diving, ribbon twirling, golf and race walking.

Not for all the bribes in the world.

The Warzone is easily bribed, just not with money. Send your affections to marekw@fresnobee.com or (559) 441-6218.
