It's that wonderful time of year again: The blossoms are peeking out. And Fanny Feastyoureyes is once again strutting her stuff.

The Reedley-based River City Theatre Company has a great tradition on its hands with its "Blossoms Up!" franchise, a series of wacky original musicals keyed to the start of the area's famed Blossom Trail. This year the company celebrates its 10th anniversary with a retooled version of the original "Blossoms Up!" show. Here's a rundown:

The premise: At its heart, "Blossoms Up!" is an old-fashioned melodrama, says director and co-creator Mark Norwood, complete with hero and heroine, a villain and lots of opportunities for the audience to weigh in on the action with boos, hisses and "yays." The story follows a conflict between the heroic Lance Goodacre and the evil Split Pitts, which they agree to settle with a bet on the outcome of the Miss Blossom Queen Pageant and Bakeoff.

The star power: For the ninth year, Matt Wiebe returns as Fanny Feastyoureyes, the niece of Split Pitts. If a man in a dress is funny, then a big man in a dress is even funnier, and at 6 feet, 4 inches, Wiebe has delivered the laughs since 2005.

The music: Norwood created the show with Darrel Devaurs, who wrote the music. Songs in the original musical included "Find Me a Dog So I Can Kick It," "Blossoms Up" and "Packinghouse Blues."

The updates: Norwood says the new version has new twists, new music and an expanded role for Fiona Feastyoureyes, Fanny's "slightly" older sister, played by Steve Jones.

The verdict: The show is a silly affair with great puns, fun characters, charming music and a chance to immerse yourself in a small-town atmosphere. Plus you might learn something about fruit.

The details: "Blossoms Up!" runs Friday through March 15 at the Reedley Opera House, 1720 10th Street, Reedley. reedleyrivercitytheatre.org, (559) 638-6500. $20-$38.
