Clovis police arrested a man after a road-rage incident Monday night near Herndon and Sunnyside avenues.

Police gave this account of the incident, which began about 5 p.m.:

The suspect had just left a gas station, made a U-turn at the intersection and sped up to pass a Honda sedan that was starting to merge into his lane. The 51-year-old suspect pulled in front of the Honda driver, who had been honking his horn, and slammed on his brakes twice near Sunnyside.

He got out of his car and ran over to the driver of the Honda and started pounding and pulling on the victim's window, prompting the victim to throw a cup of hot coffee on him.

The suspect then punched the driver several times through the open driver's-side window, and slammed the car door against him several times when the victim tried to get out. He also pushed the victim's girlfriend, who went to help the victim.

The suspect then tried to rear-end the Honda with the victims and a 2-year-old boy inside.

The suspect drove north on Minnewawa Avenue with a California Highway Patrol aircraft over him. Police followed the suspect to an area near Copper and Armstrong avenues, where he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of battery.
