Did you hear this one? A pianist, violinist and cellist walk into a bar.

Instead of ordering a drink, they decide to form a chamber trio.

Sorry about that lame attempt at classical-music humor. But, seriously, putting those three instruments together to form a trio is one of the natural things to do when it comes to chamber music. Composers over the years have loved the combination, with a large number of pieces written for piano, violin and cello.

Which is why Andreas Werz, Limor Toren-Immerman and Thomas Loewenheim, all music professors at Fresno State, decided to join forces as the Fresno State Trio.

The ensemble plays its debut recital today at Fresno State's Concert Hall. The concert is a special presentation of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts series.

The three played together at a university function last year, but this concert is their formal introduction to the local music community. Even the name of the group is still tentative, says pianist Andreas Werz, who is also the artistic director of the Keyboard Concerts series. The plan, he says, is to continue more performances in the future.

The program for today's concert features, appropriately enough, a trio of pieces: Haydn's Trio in A Major, Schubert's Trio in B-flat Major and Brahms' Trio in B Major.

The concert is co-presented by Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest and most selective honor society open to students of all academic disciplines.
