Jeremy Abbott is on target to win his fourth U.S. Figure Skating title, as the 2010 Olympian took the lead after Friday's short program.

The 27-year-old Abbott, who is the defending national champion, scored 84.10 points. That was well ahead of Ross Miner (80.99). Joshua Farris (79.78) was in third place at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Abbott finished ninth at the 2010 Winter Games and hasn't placed better than eighth at Worlds, but the Detroit native played it conservatively Friday night to take hold of the lead. He planned a quad toeloop and triple toeloop, but instead landed a triple flip and triple toe loop. His best score was for executing a triple axel.

Max Aaron (79.13) was fourth, followed by Richard Dornbush (77.66) and Adam Rippon (76.65).

The free skate is Sunday.
