He's My Brother, She's My Sister -- a Los Angeles folk band that's as funky as its name suggests -- is easily the coolest band visiting Fresno this week.
The band, already a repeat headliner at Fulton 55, is back on Thursday night, sharing the stage with quickly rising local indie/alt-country band Copper & Glass and San Francisco's Sioux City Kid.
Here are 10 reasons why we can say this is the "coolest band in Fresno this week:"
1. You know how bands with dueling male-female vocals are so cool right now? He's My Brother, She's My Sister has that and one-ups the others: Its two vocalists are brother and sister (Rob and Rachel Kolar).
2. Rob Kolar, who plays guitar and kick drum, too, is a past winner of the John Lennon songwriting contest.
3. Instead of a "normal" drummer, the band has Lauren Brown, who tap dances and drums to create something they call "full body percussion."
4. Two things stand-up bass player Oliver Newell has done in his life: hitchhike across the country and play with a symphony.
5. Guitarist Aaron Robinson is classically trained and plays slide guitar in the band. He was, at one point, landlord to a few of his bandmates, too.
6. Bands that He's My Brother, She's My Sister have played with recently: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Local Native, My Morning Jacket, Neko Case and Dr. Dog.
7. He's My Brother, She's My Sister signed with Park the Van Records, home to Dr. Dog. Its debut album, "Nobody Dances in this Town," came out this week.
8. Rachel Kolar and Brown started their own theater company.
9. Rachel Kolar also has a fashion background, having styled for stars such as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj.
10. He's not with the band this week, but part-time cello player Satya Bhabha is a Yale graduate who acts. He was in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
