COACH OF THE YEAR: BRIAN WEAVER

School: Buchanan

He's qualified because: Now a 12-time Bee Coach of the Year and 13-time winner of Central Section boys and girls team titles in the sports, Weaver got his Bears girls cross country team this season to run faster than ever. They twice broke their own section record of 92:34, first in the Clovis Invitational (92:18) and then the section final (92:11), where they won a 13th-consecutive team championship. The 92:11, led by Hagen Reedy's 17:11 and averaging 18:27 among the five scorers, ranks No. 21 in state history. Weaver is 6 for 6 in section girls team titles in a 21-year program established by Marty Simpson. Weaver is also beginning his 17th season as the school's track and field coach.

He said it: "I saw something (in August) going on, I saw something happening. I could see a bond starting to develop with all of the girls. They were working together, supporting each other and through that each girl started believing more in themselves and started running that much better. They were so good because they brought out the best in each other. They were best friends, but they wanted to beat their best friend. And Hagen was the catalyst in bringing out their talent." -- Weaver.
