"Cory's got a pretty good pedigree," Simons says.

And a plan: "Being a college defensive coordinator is a clear goal," Hall says. "Hopefully, God will bless me with the opportunity."

The South High of Bakersfield product has been given a string of chances -- albeit against long odds.

He explains: "I barely made it to Fresno State. I barely made the (NFL) draft. Then the same thing with coaching.

"If people really knew how this sport has changed my life, they'd really understand my passion for it. I've always been the underdog, but I've enjoyed it because it makes me work harder. I'm so excited because this is what I've been called to do."
