GIRLS BASKETBALL
Monache, in Division I after winning two straight section D-II titles, received 14 points, six rebounds and five steals from Emily Hardin, and another 12 combined steals from Desirae Garay and Brianna Baldwin, in a 57-49 win over Clovis East.
Veronica Miller scored 20 points in Yosemite's 58-31 win over Central, while Brittany Sims' 10 points helped Edison get past Sierra 51-43 in first-round games at the Hoover Holiday Classic.
BOYS SOCCER
Larry Valencia and Kento Rose each scored a pair of goals as Sunnyside downed Hanford West 6-0.
Juan Fernandez's goal was the difference in Madera South's 1-0 win over Clovis West.
GIRLS SOCCER
Clovis West opened its season with goals from Danielle Rowland, Hailey Flores and Emiko Kubose in a 3-1 win over Memorial.
