An antique store with a concentration on design has opened near Fresno's Fig Garden Village.
The Vintage Market at 601, on the corner of West Shaw and Wishon avenues, is owned and operated by Jacquie Shore, who works with a handful of vendors to fill the 3,000-square-foot space.
Shore owned Impatience's Collectique in Old Town Clovis for 10 years before closing in 2007 with plans to retire to the Central Coast. When retirement got put on hold, she sold antiques out of the 4th Street Antique Mall, also in Old Town Clovis.
Then her husband's old mortgage company building went up for sale in August and he brought up the idea of buying the space and restarting her business there. The store opened on Nov. 15.
Shore sells furniture, chandeliers, jewelry, dishes and art work by three Fresno artists. The items are neatly arranged by room, giving buyers a look at how they can re-create similar designs in a bedroom or living room.
"We're creating cohesive balance and beautiful space," Shore said.
Shoppers are treated to cookies and coffee while they shop. The store is open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week through the holidays.
Check in to win
A Fresno company called Motive Marketing has launched a new mobile app that lets people win prizes by checking in at participating local businesses.
The idea for CheckInSpinWin (www.checkinspinwin.com) came to Kirk Nagamine, the company's CEO, as he and Deanna Bower waited for 45 minutes for a table at a local restaurant.
"We were standing in line, and Kirk wondered how could a business connect with a customer on a more meaningful level and interact with him outside the restaurant as well," said Bower, vice president of operations.
The app is available for Apple's iPhone and iPad, and Bower said an Android app will be available in early 2013.
The app takes advantage of users' habits of checking in with apps like Foursquare and Facebook. Businesses pay to offer discounts or prizes on a virtual prize wheel; users earn spins on the wheel when they visit a business and check in on their smartphone.
"Each business can gear its wheel to the customers who are the most loyal," Bower said. The more frequently a user checks in at a particular business, the more likely their spin will yield a higher-value prize.
Bower said some prizes are shareable with friends via Twitter, Facebook and email.
For now, the app features stores and restaurants only in the Fresno area, but Bower said there are plans to expand to Las Vegas and other markets.
Togo's opens in Madera
Togo's, a popular West Coast chain of sandwich shops, has opened its newest store in Madera.
Franchisees Harpreet and Daljit Gill own the store at The Commons at Madera Fairgrounds, 2180 W. Cleveland Ave.
"We are thrilled to open the first Togo's location in Madera and are confident that local residents will become big fans of the brand," said Harpreet Gill. The Gills found the fast-growing Togo's chain to be a good investment opportunity that they could operate along with their Baskin-Robbins ice cream franchise.
Togo's features more than 20 different sandwiches, including roast beef, turkey and cranberry, chicken salad, and avocado and cucumber.
The sandwich chain operates 250 locations on the West Coast and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The company has a goal of opening 400 new locations in California, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington by 2015.
