Dancers from the group Danza San Antonio Maria Claret form part of the procession of the annual Guadalupana Celebration, starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at St. John’s Cathedral at 2814 Mariposa St. Many parishes in the Diocese of Fresno took part in a procession to the Fresno Convention Center Exhibit Hall, where a Mass is celebrated. The celebration recounts the story of the Virgin Mary’s appearance to Aztec Indian peasant Juan Diego in Mexico on Dec. 12, 1531. According to Catholic belief, the Virgin Mary, also galled the Virgin of Guadalupana, appeared on Diego’s cloak on the hill of Tepeyac. MARK CROSSE/THE FRESNO BEE
