  EDITORIAL: Valadao for Congress in 21st District

  We have been impressed with Assemblyman David Valadao’s work in the California Legislature, and believe he is prepared to represent our region in Congress. We recommend that voters in the 21st Congressional District support Valadao in the Nov. 6 election.

  Valadao, a Hanford Republican, is a conservative who can work across party lines to represent the interests of the San Joaquin Valley, as well as the nation. Valadao is a good fit for the 21st District, which is mostly rural and agricultural.

  He is the son of immigrants who came to the Valley in search of the American dream. The Valadao family emigrated from the Azores Islands of Portugal in 1969, and Valadao’s father started a small dairy farm in Kings County in 1973. His family’s experience gives Valadao, who was born in Hanford in 1977, an understanding of the challenges facing new Americans.

  Six months after passage of a $280 million bond measure in 2010, Fresno Unified School District changed the way many of its construction contracts were awarded. The traditional practice of choosing the lowest bid was placed on the back burner. Moved to the front was a method called lease/leaseback that let the district simply pick the contractor it wanted.

  EDITORIAL: Mills, Ryan, Chavez for Fresno Unified's board

  The election to fill three seats on the Fresno Unified School District board has turned out to be a referendum on Superintendent Michael Hanson's seven-year tenure leading the local school system.

  That theme is most intense in the campaigns against incumbents Carol Mills in Area 5 and Janet Ryan in Area 6. Both support Hanson, and we believe that Mills and Ryan have earned re-election. We recommend their candidacies in the Nov. 6 election. In Area 2, incumbent Larry Moore is not seeking re-election, and we recommend Luis Chavez as a replacement. Moore is the former teachers union president and has long opposed Hanson.

  While we have not always agreed with Hanson on specific issues, we believe that he has done a good job overall. In a district as diverse as Fresno Unified, no superintendent is going to make everyone happy. But on the fundamental issues, Hanson has performed well.
