A Sunnyside High School student has bacterial meningitis, a Fresno Unified School District spokeswoman said Tuesday evening.
Public Information Officer Susan Bedi said in a statement that school officials are working closely with the Fresno County Public Health Department on the case. She did not identify the student, but said school officials have already identified those who had close contact with the student -- sharing utensils, for example -- and recommended treatment with antibiotics.
Bedi said Sunnyside officials notified parents/guardians through letters sent home with students and automated calls.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Early symptoms can mimic the flu. It is fatal in about 10% of cases.
