Valley golfers fuel Fresno State team

Fresno State, led by Valley talent, is in ninth place after the first day of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.

Hannah Sodersten, a freshman from Clovis East making her college debut, Madchen Ly (sophomore, Clovis) and Christine Uhalde (junior, Modesto) shot 6-over 150s for 36 holes for the Bulldogs.

Texas Tech, shooting a 1-under 575, has a comfortable lead over New Mexico (586), Louisville (589) and Baylor (591) entering the 17-team event's completion today. Fresno State is sitting at 605.

--Bryson DeChambeau, another freshman from Clovis East breaking into the college game, shot a three-round, 2-over 218 for fifth place and Southern Methodist's best score at the Gopher Invitational at the Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn. The Mustangs placed second as a team to sixth-ranked Cal.
