New owners, including a Los Angeles attorney, have taken over the foreclosed Piccadilly Inn hotel on West Shaw Avenue in northwest Fresno.

Piccadilly Hospitality LLC, incorporated with the California Secretary of State in July, closed its purchase of the hotel on Aug. 21. The liquor license for the accompanying Oliver's restaurant was transferred on Aug. 22.

The officers of Piccadilly Hospitality LLC include Gene Hon Chien, an attorney who has offices in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego, along with Grace Suehyueh Chien, Mu Tien Chien and Yueh Mei Chien.

When it opened in mid-1973, the Piccadilly Inn -- built at a cost of $1.7 million by prominent Fresno businessman D. Paul Fansler -- was the first hotel west of Blackstone Avenue on busy Shaw Avenue.

Later owners of the hotel, as well as the Airport Piccadilly Inn and the Piccadilly Inn Express, both near the Fresno Yosemite International Airport, experienced financial troubles in recent years.

The three hotels filed for bankruptcy in 2010. In 2011, their chief creditor, Far East National Bank, declared them in default of about $27 million in unpaid loans. The bank foreclosed on all three hotels last year.

The Chiens' purchase apparently does not include either of the airport hotel properties. Before last week, the Piccadilly Inn's website included both the West Shaw and the Airport Piccadilly hotels, but now only the Shaw Avenue hotel is listed.

Terms of the sale were not revealed in documents filed with the Fresno County Recorder, but a deed of trust indicated that unpaid debts and costs associated with the West Shaw property amounted to more than $4.6 million.

Hotel managers did not return calls seeking more information about the ownership change, and Gene Hon Chien could not be reached to discuss the purchase.

Tri-tip take two

The Meat Market has returned to east-central Fresno.

The full-service meat counter, grill and deli business, which is known for its tri-tip, is back in the small building behind the Fastrip gas station at Chestnut and Clinton avenues.

The original business started at Chestnut and Shields avenues in 1976 and moved to Chestnut and Clinton a few years later, which is the location everybody remembers, said Anna Tasier. She and her husband, Steve, are partners in the business.

But the Chestnut and Clinton location has been home to B & L Quality Meats, which leased the building from the market for the past 12 years, Anna Tasier said. The Meat Market, meanwhile, relocated to Alluvial Avenue and opened a second store in Clovis.

When B & L moved to Visalia in May, Steve Tasier suggested they reopen the store as a Meat Market. The Tasiers opened quietly on Aug. 27.

"We're excited to be back in the neighborhood," Anna Tasier said. "We want everybody to come and check us out."

The market is known for its Santa Maria tri-tip and has marinated chicken, steaks, pork and fish.

The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.
