Christy Martin and Mia St. John know they are in the twilight of their decorated careers.
But each has a reason to step into the ring tonight above and beyond the vacant WBC Female Super Welterweight title on the line in the marquee fight of the five-bout "Final Victory" card at Table Mountain Casino in Friant. The fights start at 6:30 p.m.
For the 44-year-old Martin (49-6-3, 31 knockouts), there is a statistical importance to the scheduled 10-round bout.
"It doesn't matter who it is -- I just wanted to get my 50th win," said Martin, a former WBC female light middleweight champion who is fighting for only the second time since a brutal 2010 attack by her former husband, James, that nearly left her dead. "It just so happens that it's Mia. I think it will be a great fight for the boxing fans."
For the 45-year-old St. John (46-11-2, 18 KOs), it's a chance at redemption for arguably women's boxing's second-biggest star behind Martin. St. John, a former Playboy covergirl, dropped a 97-93, 99-91, 97-93 decision against Martin on Dec. 6, 2002, in the Pontiac Silverdome.
"I feel like I can beat her. I feel like as we've aged, I'm in better condition than she is," said St. John, who tipped the scales at 146.6 pounds -- compared to Martin's 150.2 -- for a contracted 150.5-pound bout. "If I'm going to beat her, now is the time to do it."
Monday's weigh-in at the Bod-e² Shop in Clovis produced a hint of drama as St. John arrived roughly an hour late, drawing Martin's ire.
"I think it's disrespectful. We're both champions and we're supposed to conduct ourselves as champions," Martin said. "I wish (the fight was) today so I could get it over with. She'll have to sit and think about the beating she's going to take for the next 24 hours. I take some pleasure in that."
St. John said she has learned from their first fight, and has no plans of losing a second time.
"I'm a counter-puncher and a boxer," St. John said. "Now I'm still going to stick to who I am as a boxer, but I am going to throw a lot more punches to score more points."
Each says this could be her last fight, although Martin conceded there is a 1% chance she will fight again and St. John said she would agree to a rubber match if she wins.
