Elberta peach season reaches its peak

It is Elberta peach time. The old-time fuzzy peach is beloved for its fine texture, sweet aroma and rich flavor. And this time of year, peach harvest is moving quickly. Some farmers are done with their crop and others have about a two-week supply.

"The season came up on us really quickly," said Bill Smittcamp of Wawona Orchards. "All of a sudden everything got ripe at the same time."

Here is a partial list of where you can find Elberta peaches and its related varieties:

Peach on Earth Farm

Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily.

Location: 4941 N. Dower Ave., just south of Shaw Ave.

Farmer Mary Lou Hurtado will have Fay Elberta peaches through the end of the week.

Knowles' Farm, Fowler

Location: 7175 S. Peach Ave., Fowler, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

Farmer Donna Knowles will have Elberta peaches for about two weeks.

Customers can call and order in advance and pick them up at the ranch

Rob Mizuno

Location:

6319 S. Alta Ave., Reedley

The Mizuno farms' Elberta peaches will be available for about two weeks and are being sold at Takahashi Farms Fruit Stand at Copper Avenue and Auberry Road. You also can order in advance and pick up at the farm. Call (559) 289-0108 for details.

PK Fruit Farms

Farmer Parry Klassen will have Elberta peaches available Friday and Saturday at Sierra Nut House, 7901 North Blackstone Ave.

His peaches also can be bought at Bella Frutta, southeast corner of Shepherd and Willow avenues in Clovis and at the Centerville Fruit Stand on Highway 180 in Centerville.

Steve Lubisich's farm stand

Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, Sundays by appointment only.

Location: Nees Avenue, just west of Willow Avenue.

Lubisich expects to harvest Fay Elberta peaches for at least two weeks, starting this weekend.

His stand is behind a home on Nees Avenue, just west of Willow Avenue. Look for the sign that says "Peaches, "then turn into the driveway.

Wawona Orchards, The Peach Tree fruit stand

Hours: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays.

Location: Minnewawa Avenue, just north of Nees Avenue.

The Peach Tree offers Fay Elberta peaches and Fayettes, a closely related variety.

The stand will have Elberta peaches through the end of next week.
