He's qualified because: The Bears' cross country and track and field program, as an entity, gained further traction as the Central Section's most superior by sweeping the section's boys and girls Masters team titles. That had not been accomplished outright in track and field since Clovis West in 1999. Edison, in 2005, tied Clovis West for the boys' crown and won the girls. This season, Buchanan routed the boys' field by 37.7 points and edged fellow TRAC member Clovis North by 5.1 in the girls.

"That's one of the team goals," says Weaver, an 11-time Bee Coach of the Year, "first to win (the Tri-River Athletic Conference) and then be Valley champions. I thought the boys would have a good chance (to win Masters) and I knew it was going to be a fight for the girls. It's very exciting. I'm fortunate to have the staff I have, and past athletes come back and help out. It's a family because we all care so much."

Pass the baton? Weaver briefly threw in his hat before pulling out for the recent Clovis North athletic-director vacancy. What else to accomplish as a coach who for four years also has directed the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan's Veterans Memorial Stadium? And that's a drain, responsible effectively for more than 1,100 athletes from 350 schools.

"As a coach I've been surrounded by an amazing staff and athletes," he says. "I like challenges, but I have a hard time getting out of my comfort zone. There's a very good possibility of pursuing administration in the next few years, but I don't have a timeline."

Managing the state track meet -- the nation's most comprehensive -- continues to move him: "It's an amazing experience when all's said and done, a great thing. Some days are better than others. Things come up in the middle of practice that are kind of hard, but I focus on our athletes and my staff doesn't miss a beat; we're all on the same page."

Eight keys, he says, that allow him to continue as Buchanan's CEO of track and field, direct the state meet and devour the whole enchilada: assistants Marty Simpson, Win Downing, Nick Paramo, Billie Childes, Ray Hansen, Scott Endler, Brook Constable and James Soares.
