Chosen because: Despite having to replace seven seniors -- including Tri-River Athletic Conference Player of Year Stefan Loop -- and overcome internal doubts, Juinio's Golden Eagles got off to confidence-building 13-0 start en route to capturing share of league title and Central Section Division I championship. Top-seeded Clovis West rolled through No. 2 Buchanan 8-1, wrapping up title before doubles matches started. "We lost a lot of seniors and expectations weren't that high," said Juinio, the former Fresno State standout. "When players are talking about it, you know it's not good. But we took the season one match at a time. Our guys stepped up."

Wake-up call: Clovis West suffered lone defeat April 24 -- 5-4 to Buchanan team it routed 7-2 in first round of TRAC play. Golden Eagles didn't lose again, winning final five matches to secure program's fourth consecutive D-I title. "It's a good thing we lost that match," Juinio said. "It helped get us back to the championship match."

Background: Juinio has been fixture in Fresno-area tennis scene for more than 20 years. He arrived at Fresno State in 1992, launching four-year career that would see him win then-school-record 105 matches (he's now second on wins list). From there, Juinio got into coaching, where he has been an assistant at Pepperdine (for former Bulldogs coach Peter Smith), Fresno State and most recently Fresno Pacific before taking over for Cris Petersen at Clovis West. "As an assistant you can hang out in the shadows," Juinio said. "But here, the buck stops with me, and it's good to experience that leadership role. I have kids who are like sponges, and I have to make them believe what they are capable of doing on the tennis court."
