He's qualified because: Became one of four divers in history to win at least three Central Section titles when he tallied 475.25 points on 11 dives to capture gold at the Division I finals. He scored 87.35 more points than his closest competitor. Only Madera's Don McAllister (1963-66) has won four titles -- according to historian Bob Barnett -- which Ruiz came close to accomplishing. He was second as a freshman. Ruiz was a four-time All-American, three-time Clovis West Invitational champ and a four-time Tri-River Athletic Conference champ. He set the school record with a 501.85 at the 2010 section finals. "Over the course of his career, he's gone from an extremely good diver to basically an ambassador to the sport in our high school area," Clovis East diving coach Patrick O'Meara said of Ruiz, who will dive for Arizona State next season. Ruiz, who competed in gymnastics before high school, also competed in the pole vault the past two seasons, qualifying for the CIF State Championships by placing third at the Masters at 14-9. His top mark of the season was 15-1.
