Local sports briefs: Patel, Weaver advance at California State Amateur

Defending champion Bhavik Patel made a 40-foot putt to clinch a 2-and-1 match play victory against Tyler Raber to advance to the Round of 16 at the California Amateur Golf Championship at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.

The former Fresno State golfer led 3 up after three holes, but the lead was down to one before he made the putt on the 17th hole to finish the match. The No. 1-seeded Patel will face Maxwell Marsico at 7:30 a.m. today.

Michael Weaver (ex-Clovis West High) also advanced when he defeated Gary Robinson 2 up. He will face Matt Hansen at 8:15 a.m. today. Pace Johnson (ex-Clovis West) was eliminated when he lost to Ben Geyer in 20 holes.

'Dogs volleyball team opens home season with tourney

The Fresno State volleyball team will open the season Aug. 24 against Texas-El Paso before opening its home schedule Sept. 7-8 in the Fresno State Classic.

The Bulldogs' annual exhibition against Fresno Pacific is set for Sept. 25 at the Save Mart Center. Full schedule, Page B4.

Rage softball finishes 2nd

The 14-and-under Fresno Rage girls softball team placed second at the ASA Cal State Games qualifying tournament at Buchanan High. The Rage next competes in the state tournament July 20-22 in San Diego.

Team members include: Mikayla Castillo, Arianna Cuaron, Maddie Delgado, Rachel Duarte, Matilda Garcia, Giana Guizar, Makenna Hogan, Naomi MacDonald, Vanessa Moffat, Micaela Navarro, Angelica Ramirez, Vanessa Rascon, Eryn Sandoval and Peyton Wickstrom. The team is coached by Raymond Delgado.

Valley team wins tourney

The TC Twins, a youth travel team of 13-year-olds from Fresno and Clovis, captured the Omaha Nebraska SlumpBuster Tournament after finishing 7-0.

In the championship, Zach Presno threw a one-hit shutout in a 10-0 victory against Millard of Omaha, Neb. The tournament featured 52 teams from throughout the country.

Other team members include: Jace Chamberlin, Marcus Mele, Braden Fitzgerald, Darren Jansen, Gio Guzman, Carson Olson, Jordan Prendiz, Jake Ruby, Quentin Selma, Chase Rocamora, and Jack Taylor.

Youth soccer team wins Cup

The California Odyssey 17-under girls soccer team won the U.S. Club National Cup Regional last weekend in Modesto.

The Odyssey went 4-1 at the tournament, beating Boca 1-0 in the championship. The Odyssey qualified to play in the national tournament in Illinois in July.

Team members include: Adrianna Anquiano, Erin Banda, Taylor Brechmann, Janice Coley, Sherine Collins, Lindsey Dovali, Darby Emmons, Julie Garcia, Megan Lynes, Taylor Reeves, Emilia Vargas, Kirsten Von Meter, and Taylor Williams. The team is coached by Kevin Botterill and Brandon Kwock.
