A 48-year-old man suspected of yanking copper wire out of a utility pole in Clovis was arrested Tuesday morning, police said.

The man, Jack Alford, 48, was taken into custody about 9 a.m. during a traffic stop near Shaw and McKelvy avenues. The suspect was seen Monday pulling out the wire near Sunnyside Avenue and Tollhouse Road. He left the wire behind, but caused thousands of dollars in damage, police said.

Police found a flashlight, a pair of wire strippers and a pair of gloves stored in a backpack during a probation check at the suspect's home. Photographs taken Monday showed the suspect had the backpack with him at the time of the attempted theft, police said.
