Controversial judging cost Avenal boxer Jose Ramirez on Thursday in his 132-pound semifinal at the AIBA Americas Qualifying Event in Rio de Janeiro.

Ramirez dropped a 13-10 decision to Wellington Arias of the Dominican Republic despite giving his opponent two standing 8 counts in the final round and one that wasn’t called at the end of the bout that would have given Ramirez a technical knockout.

Rick Mirigian, Ramirez’s business adviser, said the crowd erupted in disgust after the decision was read.

The loss has no bearing on Ramirez’s Olympic bid. With his quarterfinal victory Wednesday, he earned a spot to represent Team USA in the Summer Olympics.

“I’m smiling as I’m going to London as an Olympian,” the 19-year-old Ramirez said in a email sent by Mirigian.

“But I’m trying to figure out how I gave my opponent two standing 8 counts in the final round and almost a third for a TKO and still didn’t even win the round.”

Ramirez’s decorated amateur career includes143 wins, 11 national titles and six consecutive USA gold medals. He plans to turn pro after the Games.
