  Since when did supporting your child's neighborhood school become a reason for others to call names and inspire such venom (story Jan. 24)? I would be thrilled to read that every high school in town had 500-plus parents show up to support their school, as Bullard did. Calling names and using slurs to make your point is immature and unproductive.

  It is time for parents to take back the responsibility for their child's success. Support and improve your child's school, and rejoice when others do the same.

  Bullard High School will celebrate the opening of its remodeled gym tonight with a winter sports rally and ribbon cutting, Fresno Unified School District said.

  The event starts at 7 p.m. at 5445 N. Palm Ave. and will feature a 3-point shooting contest between the boys and girls basketball teams and a slam-dunk contest.

  The finished remodel, which includes a new entrance with redesigned foyer, powered bleachers, refinished floors, and new lighting and sound system, is the final stage of modernization for the high school with Measure K funds.

  A paid advertisement in Sunday's Bee states as one of its key points that "The standards of dress and discipline never have been worse at Bullard and Tenaya."

  Former Clovis Unified District Superintendent Floyd "Doc" Buchanan is among the supporters of this ad. Dr. Buchanan served as superintendent of Walnut Creek schools until leaving in 1962 to come to Clovis. Walnut Creek Elementary was a "feeder school" to Acalanes High School and/or Las Lomas High School, components of the Acalanes High School District of which my father, Neil Parsons, was superintendent.

  Dr. Buchanan and my father must have shared many ideas on how to best run a school district. The dress code in the Acalanes District was simple, effective and just. As to discipline, students who behaved as described in this ad were expelled immediately, never to return.

  Something great is happening: competitive high school bass fishing. It started as an idea about connecting Roosevelt High School students to their community in an attempt to improve both. The good news is, it's working and bringing together people from all over who understand that access to quality outdoor recreation results in an improved quality of life.

  Eighteen students (boys and girls who meet grade-point average and community service requirements) from Roosevelt and Clovis Unified School District, along with nine volunteer boat captains, made up the nine teams competing in the RHS Bass Fishing Club's third tournament of the year Saturday at Pine Flat.

  The students are engaged, the momentum is building and the community is benefiting. Go bass fishers!
