The former Gus' Meat Locker in Madera has a new name, new owners and a new look.

The longtime deli and butcher at 412 W. Olive Ave. is now Chase's Chop Shop.

Scott and Melissa Chase took over the business last year and have remodeled, including new floors and retiled walls.

"We have people that have come in their whole lives and they're just awestruck," said manager Mickey Turner.

The business recently won two California Association of Meat Processor awards for its sausage.

Repairs and remodels

A Fresno home repair and contracting business has changed names, but not work ethics.

Home Repair Contractors, formerly Handyman Connection, prides itself on the professional and licensed work it has provided to thousands of customers across the Valley over the last 10 years.

Nick Dvorak, who owns the business and runs it with his son, Tim, says that won't change, even though they are parting ways with Handyman Connection, a national franchise company.

"Our specialty is having a licensed contractor come to your home with bonded insurance to take care of a small repair," Dvorak said.

No job is too small for the Dvoraks and their nine employees, who do everything from changing smoke alarm batteries to repairing doors, laying tile, remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and garages, painting, carpentry and plumbing.

That's one reason they decided to change names. "Handyman" made it seem like the business only did home repairs when it also does contracting work, Dvorak said.

Orchard grows

A new Orchard Supply Hardware has opened in the former Save Mart store at 6055 N. Figarden Drive near Bullard Avenue.

The 50,000-square-foot store, which employs 75, includes a 7,700-square-foot garden center.

Manager Mike Ellis is a Clovis resident who has worked for Orchard since 1979, including at many Fresno-area stores.

The new store features the company's new, easy-to-navigate layout.

The store is open and will celebrate its grand opening beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, giving away $25 gift cards to the first 200 customers in line.
