Memorial reaches D-II boys basketball final

The Fresno BeeFebruary 28, 2012

Robert Upshaw helped secure Memorial High a spot in the Central Section Division II boys basketball final -- and a rematch with Tulare.

The Kansas State-bound 7-footer had 20 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to power the top-seeded Panthers past No. 5 Garces 56-42 in a Tuesday semifinal.

Memorial (22-8) advances to the 8 p.m. final Friday at Selland Arena against second-seeded Tulare, which ousted the Panthers 71-52 last season in the semifinals.

Garces (18-9) led 31-30 at halftime, but the Panthers switched to a zone defense at halftime and limited the Rams to 11 points the rest of the way.

Jordan Stallworth scored 11 points and Royshon Snowden added 10 for Memorial.

The second-seeded Redskins (28-4) rode 33 points from William Stallworth to a 76-49 throttling of the No. 3 East Bakersfield Blades for a return trip to Selland.

Tulare, which lost 43-33 to Clovis North in last year's final, also received 19 points from Keonta Vernon.
