Valley prep sports highlights for Wednesday, Feb. 22

GIRLS SOCCER

Kelsee Pottorff got past two defenders to score in the 70th minute as top-seeded Clovis North outlasted No. 5 Memorial 2-1 in the Central Section Division II semifinals. Clovis North (22-3-1) advances to its fourth straight section final.

Nayeli Colunga scored twice and Celeste Navarrete once, all in the first half, as top-seeded Strathmore built a commanding lead during a 3-1 win over No. 2 Caruthers for the Division V title.

BOYS SOCCER

Chris Gomez knocked in a header off Marcos Cisneros' corner in the 7th minute for No. 3 Madera, but No. 7 Liberty-Bakersfield scored 1 minute later and led by halftime in a 3-1 win in the D-I semifinals. The Patriots face No. 4 Buchanan, which beat No. 1 Central 2-0.

No. 2 Sunnyside ended No. 11 Reedley's run of upsets, as Gerardo Farfan scored twice in a 3-1 semifinals. The Wildcats (18-5-2) advance to their first D-II final in school history. They'll face No. 4 Clovis North, which got goals from David Omi, Shadnt Avadis and Kory Kisling in a 3-1 overtime win over top-seeded Golden Valley.

A year after missing the playoffs, No. 4 Fowler will play for the D-V title after beating No. 8 Liberty-Madera Ranchos 3-2 on Ernan Ibarra's overtime goal.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nathan Amundsen grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a runner at the buzzer as eighth-seeded Clovis East beat No. 9 Clovis 73-71 to open the D-I playoffs. Amundsen, who scored the Timberwolves' final four points, finished with 15. Clovis East's reward is a Thursday quarterfinal at top-seeded Bullard.

Ahmad Jones' 23 points powered No. 4 Hoover past No. 13 Delano 77-50 in D-III. Will Nelson had 25 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks as No. 1 Mt. Whitney beat No. 16 Roosevelt 59-46.

No. 9 Dinuba held No. 8 Madera South scoreless the entire first quarter en route to a 54-36 victory in the D-III playoffs. Dinuba's Marcus McMaryion scored 13 points. Madera South's Shaq Moore led all scorers with 16.

Shakor Major scored 14 points and defending D-IV champ Washington, this year's ninth seed, got out of the first round with a 46-36 win at No. 8 Caruthers.

Stanford-bound Grant Verhoeven paced top-seeded Central Valley Christian early before taking a lengthy break in the second half, scoring 18 points in a 75-31 win against Riverdale in the D-IV playoffs.

Trevor Price scored 21 points and Austin Bray added 17 as No. 4 Kingsburg eliminated No. 13 Orosi 58-52 in D-IV. Orosi's Ronchel Ortel scored a game-high 24 points.

Derek Austrum (12) and Jake Blunt (11) combined for 23 of Sierra's 29 first-quarter points as the No. 2 Chieftains jumped to a big lead and never looked back in a 76-45 D-IV win over No. 15 Farmersville. Austrum finished with 19 points and Blunt 18.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kingsburg beat McLane 47-29 in the D-III play-in game as Amber Carson scored 12 points. The Vikings will face No. 1 Ridgeview.

BOYS RUGBY

Trent Barnes scored a pair of tries as Buchanan improved to 3-0 with a 34-0 victory against Clovis West at Todd Beamer Park in Clovis.
