Sean Silva and Will Rosado teamed up to throw the sixth no-hitter in Fresno City College history as the Rams blanked visiting Chabot 2-0 to split their nonconference doubleheader.
Silva and Rosado combined on 17 strikeouts, including 10 for Silva. Rosado also went 2 for 3 at the plate.
The Northern California No. 11-ranked Rams (4-4) lost the first game 4-3 when reliever James Brager allowed a two-out base hit to the No. 5 Gladiators (4-4) in the ninth.
- Kyle Coppom's three-run, eighth-inning triple powered Reedley to a 9-5 victory over Solano as part of the Reedley Classic. Jonathan Rodriguez and Cody White each had two hits and scored three runs for the Tigers (3-3), while Richard Demshok and Chris De la Torre pitched 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
- Dean Burkett's three hits and Dominic Chavez's two RBIs weren't nearly enough offense for Porterville (1-7) in a 15-3 loss to Sierra at the Reedley Classic.
Fuego opens PDL season April 22
The Fresno Fuego will kick off the 2012 Premier Development League soccer season April 22 against LA Misioneros FC at Chukchansi Park.
The Fuego will play a 16-game schedule against Southwest Division opponents, eight home and eight road. Thirteen new teams have joined the PDL for a total of 73 franchises in four conferences and nine divisions. Six teams changed names.
Fresno went 13-0-3 in the 2012 regular season, led the PDL in attendance at 45,200 and reached the Western final. Fans can get free admission vouchers at Univision Radio or on the Fuego fan page on Facebook.
NAHL Monsters to go dormant
The Fresno Monsters will suspend operation of their North American Hockey League team next season.
The NAHL Board of Governors voted to allow the Monsters and six other teams to declare dormancy for 2012-13. Monsters coach/General Manager Eric Ballard did not return a call seeking comment.
Fresno is 19-16-9, fifth in the West Division. It hosts Dawson Creek at 7:35 p.m. today. The Monsters' lower-level Western States Hockey League team will continue to operate, marketing director Jeri Elsasser said.
Cal on top, Bulldogs 14th in Hawaii
Cal has the lead with Fresno State in 14th heading into the final round at the John Burns Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course in Kahuku, Oahu.
The Golden Bears, whose team includes Pace Johnson (Clovis West High) have a two-round total of 20-under 270-286--556, followed by Southern Methodist (560) and New Mexico (566) in the 18-school field.
Fresno State is at 292-308--600. Brian Sunker is the Bulldogs' individual leader, tied for 49th at 71-77--148.
SMU's Sam Fidone and Duke's Julian Suri share the individual lead at 9-under 135. Johnson shares 16th at 142. UNLV, with ex-Clovis East star Derek Ernst at 146, is fifth as a team at 569.
Sunbirds dominate Biola in tennis
Fresno Pacific had its way with host Biola on the tennis court with the NAIA No. 2 Sunbirds women's team sweeping the Eagles 9-0 and the top-ranked men winning 8-1.
Neither squad dropped a set in singles and both improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Erika Januskova had an impressive afternoon, teaming with Katarena Paliivets for an 8-0 triumph at No. 1 doubles before blanking Shamariah De Rojas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Biola's women are 0-4 and 0-2 and the men 1-2 and 0-2.
Rams stay unbeaten in men's tennis
Adam De Romas and Christian Fisher won at Nos. 1-2 singles, respectively, and combined to win at No. 2 doubles to lead Fresno City to an 8-1 nonconference men's tennis win over Santa Rosa.
Brian Harpin, Anthony Martinez and Rolan Gonzalez also won in singles for the Rams (3-0).
Fresno State women set to tee off
Senior Louisa Lies and freshman Madchen Ly headline the Fresno State women's golf team as the Bulldogs begin their spring schedule Saturday at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford.
Lies and Ly each recorded two top-10 finishes during the fall season.
FCC teams join in on cancer fight
Fresno City College's Central Valley Conference champion men's and women's basketball teams will hold Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Saturday in their final regular-season home games.
Anyone donating $10 will receive a pink Rams T-shirt. The women play Reedley at 5 p.m.; the men face Columbia at 7.
