Bob Crossman brought an Australian coffee trend to Clovis a month ago when he decided to move back to his hometown after spending 15 years Down Under.

Call it coffee on wheels.

Crossman franchised Cafe2U, a mobile gourmet espresso coffee business, started in Australia in 2000.

He drives around Clovis serving coffee from the back of his red van equipped with coffee grinder, coffee maker and blender for smoothies.

The drink menu includes lattes, mochas, chai lattes, espresso and an Australian flat white, a cousin of the cappuccino without the creamy head. Crossman also makes iced coffees and fruit smoothies.

He sells sandwiches from Eddie's Bakery and baked goods from Doré Bakery.

"People love the convenience," said Crossman, who frequents the medical offices along Herndon Avenue. "I've been well received."

Crossman takes orders in advance and is available for special events.

Savvy software

Derrick Reimer writes software and builds websites for a living, and even he gets fed up with unclear or outdated instructions for software or tech gear.

"My biggest issue with a lot of software on the market now is that there aren't good instructions on how to use it," he said.

That frustration prompted the 23-year-old Reedley resident to create GuideKit, www.guidekit.com, an online tool to help software developers build interactive "user documentation" (what most people call "instruction manuals") that companies and customers can use to make their instructions user-friendly and keep them up to date.

"I was looking at what was out there for community-driven documentation for people to provide answers to one another and I couldn't find one anywhere," Reimer said.

Reimer's idea emerged from the 59 Days of Code competition in 2011, a Fresno-based effort to showcase local programmers. GuideKit won the grand prize in the "zero-code" category for products that were written completely from scratch during the two-month contest period.

GuideKit.com officially went live this month, offering two options for developers to post their user documentation online: a free "open source" service in which users can collaboratively edit the information at will, or a more secure $7-a-month package in which companies can control who edits the material. Each allows users to post questions and seek answers from the developers or other users.

PetSmart in Porterville

PetSmart in Porterville drew about 300 people -- and plenty of pet dogs -- to its grand opening this month.

The store opened in the growing Porterville Marketplace shopping center on Henderson Avenue. The center also will be home to clothing stores Marshalls and Rue 21, and Famous Footwear, all opening within the next six weeks, said Donnette Silva Carter, president and CEO of the Porterville Chamber of Commerce.

PetSmart is the first big-box pet store in Porterville, Silva Carter said. People started lining up at 5 a.m. for the 9 a.m. ribboncutting, drawn in part by promotions like free gift cards and dog toys.
