  The Fresno Bee published a recent editorial cartoon featuring two graves, side-by-side, one for Joseph Stalin and one for Hugo Chavez. Stalin's image, looking over at Chavez, is portrayed as thinking, "Amateur." This cartoon displays an incredible amount of ignorance and any comparison of the two is inaccurate and unfair.

  Stalin imposed a brutal totalitarian rule in Russia where millions needlessly died; there is no evidence that Chavez was guilty of genocide. Stalin's Russia did not enjoy freedom of the press or a free political process; Venezuela on the contrary has independent and free media and a robust political system. American corporations did business with Stalin and funded him with millions of dollars; during the energy crisis in 2002 Chavez offered cheap heating oil to the American poor in Brooklyn when American companies refused to help.

  He was an autocrat and no saint. Venezuela faces its own challenges as a nation. But is it any worse than here where the media and the political process are
