Local sports briefs: Fresno State favored to win WAC baseball title

Fresno State is favored to win the Western Athletic Conference regular-season baseball title, with four of the seven coaches picking the Bulldogs in a poll released Wednesday.

Fresno State totaled 33 points. The Bulldogs have won the title five out of the past six seasons. San Jose State (31 points, three firsts) was second followed by Hawaii (29), Nevada and New Mexico State (both 17), Louisiana Tech (14) and Sacramento State (six).

New Mexico State catcher Zac Fisher is the Preseason Player of the Year. San Jose State's Zack Jones is the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Fresno State sophomore outfielder Aaron Judge and sophomore left-hander Tyler Linehan were named to the All-WAC team. Sacramento State junior first baseman Clay Cederquist, a former Bulldog who starred at Fresno City College and Fowler High, also was an All-WAC selection.

Medeles pitches Sunbirds past visiting Oregon Tech

Left-hander Josh Medeles allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts over five scoreless innings and Fresno Pacific beat visiting Oregon Tech 8-5.

The Sunbirds (5-2) scored six runs in the fourth to lead 8-0. Chisholm Witt had a two-run single and Alec Mehrten a two-run double in the big inning.

Karlan Andrews went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kevin Magill had three hits and an RBI.

Boutillier leads Bulldogs to tennis victory vs. Dons

Fresno State won the doubles point and dominated in singles for a 5-2 men's tennis victory against San Francisco at the Wathen Center.

Remi Boutillier, ranked No. 14, won 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 over William Schumacher at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs (5-1). He teamed with Francis Alcantara at No. 1 doubles for an 8-2 win against the Dons' Schumacher and Jonathan Knowlman.

COS men top Porterville

Jermaine Dansby hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 18 points and four steals as College of the Sequoias beat Porterville 70-65 in a Central Valley Conference men's basketball game.

The Giants (16-10, 6-4) and Pirates (12-13, 5-5) were tied 31-31 at halftime. Anthony Hildago scored 19 for Porterville.

  • Kris Collins scored 17 points as Reedley beat host Merced 67-57 for its third straight win. Delvon Henderson added 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks for the Tigers (10-12, 4-5). Andre Matson had 15 points for the Blue Devils (1-19, 0-9).
  • West Hills (15-10, 6-3) cruised to an 89-69 win against visiting Columbia (9-14, 3-7).

Sunbirds' Tuivanuavou collects NAIA honor

Fresno Pacific senior Milika Tuivanuavou is the NAIA national women's indoor field athlete of the week after winning the triple jump and shot put at the Westmont Sunshine Open in Santa Barbara.

Tuivanuavou leaped 381/4 feet in the triple jump, second in the NAIA this season. She had a mark of 41-1 in the shot put, third best in the NAIA.

Youth soccer champs to be honored at Clovis school

The Dry Creek Strikers U10 girls team won the California Youth Soccer Association title in Sacramento after finishing first in the California Junior Soccer League open division.

The Strikers beat Teixeira Farms of Hanford for the CYSA title for their 49th straight victory.

A trophy presentation is today at 2 p.m. at Dry Creek Elementary in Clovis.
