Fresno Athletic Hall of Famer Lee Angelich dies at 91

Coach won eight league championships, 255 games in basketball.

Lee Angelich, a 2008 Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, died Friday at age 91, leaving behind a legacy of boys high school basketball victories and championships.

Mr. Angelich coached Kerman, Porterville and Fresno highs to eight league championships and a combined 255-76 record from 1947-63. His 1949 Kerman team won the CIF Central Section small schools title and he coached Fresno to 48 consecutive victories and four straight North Yosemite League championships in 10 seasons.

In addition, Mr. Angelich guided the Fresno High boys track and field team to the 1957 league championship. He was inducted into the Fresno High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

Mr. Angelich also helped organize and coach the Libyan national team that competed in the 1961 North African Games. After retiring from teaching and coaching, he was a successful real estate agent.

The son of Serbians Bozo and Bosilka, Mr. Angelich was born in Wilmington before the family moved to the central San Joaquin Valley. He was a lieutenant in the Navy on the USS Rixey in the Pacific, and was awarded the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons and the Philippine Liberation ribbon.

Mr. Angelich was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Serbian Orthodox Church since 1955 and an active member of the St. Peter's Men's Club.

Mr. Angelich is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy, daughters Judith and husband David Ward of Houston; Cathy and husband Larry Esajian of Kingsburg; Susan and husband Danny Boitano of Clovis; brother John and wife Marian Angelich of Fresno; sister-in-law Olga Angelich of Fresno; and seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 17 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Stephens and Bean Chapel from 2-7 p.m. Friday, followed by a prayer service. A celebration of Mr. Angelich's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.
