BOYS BASKETBALL

  • Derek Austrum scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half as Division IV No. 2-ranked Sierra built a 31-point lead and cruised to a 62-48 win over D-IV No. 3 Chowchilla that created a tie between the Chieftains and Redskins atop the North Sequoia League.
  • Central Valley Christian, ranked No. 7 overall and No. 1 in D-IV, received 25 points, 14 rebounds and five assists from Grant Verhoeven in a 71-49 win against Dinuba in Central Sequoia League play.
  • Will Nelson's 14 points helped No. 10 Mt. Whitney beat El Diamante 58-50 and secure at least a tie for the West Yosemite League title while bracing for an intracity home-court collision Friday with CVC.
  • Mendota escaped with a 47-46 West Sierra League win after Dos Palos missed one of two free throws with 8 seconds remaining.
