  Clovis city officials unveiled a $3.4 million solar project Monday that will help power the headquarters of the city's police and fire departments.

  Join us in honoring and supporting our veterans and seniors at the Clovis Memorial Run the Saturday of Memorial Weekend, May 26. Don't let the word "run" scare you -- you can walk the entire way. All ages and abilities are welcome and the proceeds go to create a laptop computer lab for seniors at the Clovis Senior Center.

  Events consist of a 5K run/walk, a two-mile walk, a half-mile kids race and a half-mile senior walk or wheelchair push called the S.A.F.E Walk and Roll. A resource fair also will be held and provide information for services available to seniors and veterans. A pancake breakfast will also be served by the Clovis Kiwanis.

  A small entry fee is required for participants except veterans and active military who may participate for free. Each registered participant will receive a race T-shirt, participant ribbon, goodie bag, pancake breakfast ticket and one free raffle ticket.

  A cherished memory

  One of my most cherished memories of Fresno's night life was dancing in the grand lobby of the Hotel Fresno. Several organizations promoted an evening of dance with Jack Martin's orchestra playing big band music.

  One memorable dance was the arrangement of "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller. The pauses in the score always delighted me. I always thought the song had ended, but the band came in strong and continued playing.

  Another reason for my cherished memories is because I worked in refurbishing the guest rooms. My brother, Chick, and I operated a steamer in softening the wallpaper on the walls to remove the old paper for later putting up new paper. We were given a free meal as part of our pay, which was a big deal as our meals at home weren't very adequate.

  Buchanan High's C.J. Albertson, one of the greatest long-distance runners in Central Section history and a lifetime straight-A student, won the B'nai B'rith Student-Athlete award Monday night at Clovis Veterans Memorial Building.

  Kudos to Clovis and the organizers of the fourth leg of the Amgen Tour of California. What a great event. My daughter and I took the city shuttle from the mall to the race -- it couldn't have been easier. Thanks for creating new memories for us.
