Taylor Thompson had to accept the cold, hard truth after breaking her left foot as a freshman that she wouldn't play basketball that season for Fresno State.

Two years later, the 5-foot-5 sophomore guard out of Cache, Okla., faced a similar challenge when coach Adrian Wiggins switched her from the point to shooting guard.

"Taylor is totally selfless and hasn't questioned me once," Wiggins said. "I know and she knows she's a point guard. But she's doing what's best for the team, and that's why we're successful."

Fresno State (16-4) is on a five-game winning streak and leads the Western Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record heading into today's game against second-place Hawaii at the Save Mart Center.

The Bulldogs opened the season with Washington State transfer Ki-Ki Moore at the point with freshman Madison Parrish, a two-time Bee Player of the Year out of Hanford High, backing up.

It took Thompson about 12 games to find her footing at the new position. But, once she did, the Bulldogs gained a more consistent scorer, defender and assist-maker.

"I had to find my role and knew I'd need more confidence in my shot," Thompson said. "I started feeling more comfortable around conference time and knew I needed to step it up a level."

In Thompson's first 12 games, she averaged 7 points, 3.4 assists, shot 31% from the field and 18.4% from beyond the arc. Over the past eight, she is averaging 12.7 points, 4.25 assists and is shooting 42% overall and 14 of 30 (47%) on 3-pointers.

Thompson leads the team with 84 assists and has 32 turnovers, lowest among those playing 20 minutes or more a game.

"I'm not bringing the ball up the court now, so I feel I have a lot more energy," said Thompson, whose 2.63 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks No. 6 in the nation.

Thompson's broken foot as a freshman turned into a redshirt season, where she learned the ropes from senior LaShay Fears.

Last season, Thompson started at point guard and directed Fresno State to the WAC tournament championship and its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

"Redshirting was invaluable for her," Wiggins said. "Now she's more experienced and it's showing. She has the three things you want: She's smart, in great condition and she's fast."
