It isn't often that a Fresno synagogue hosts a scholar-in-residence program for a weekend.

With the help of the Jewish Federation of Central California, Chabad of Fresno is hosting Rabbi Moshe Yosef Engel, an educator for more than 40 years at the Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach. The special event -- "One Shabbat One World" -- is Friday and next Saturday.

The purpose is to call attention to the importance of raising families with strong Jewish values.

Here's what to expect:

  • A candle lighting at 5:08 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, services at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., followed by Engel's talk on "How to Raise a Contemporary Jewish Family."

  • Services at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, and a Kiddush luncheon, followed by Engel's talk on "Planting Seeds: Nurturing Body and Soul."
  • The weekend's activities also include a Havdallah service, Melava Malka and refreshments at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Hampton Inn & Suites, with a kumzitz by Rabbi Shmuli Schlanger of Chabad of Bakersfield on "Shabbos in a Gas Station: Transmitting Jewish Values to Our Youth."

Chabad of Fresno is at 1227 E. Shepherd Ave. Cost is $36 for adults or $10 for children ages 3-12. College students get in free. Details: (559) 432-2770.

    Bishop's installation on TV

KNXT Catholic Television (Channel 49) will broadcast live the Canonical Possession and Reception of the Diocese of Fresno and the Mass of Installation for Bishop Armando X. Ochoa.

    Both events are this week:

The broadcast also will be streamed live online at www.KNXT.tv. The events will be rebroadcast at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Ochoa is the fifth bishop in the Diocese of Fresno's 44-year history. He replaces Bishop John T. Steinbock, who died Dec. 5, 2010, after battling lung cancer. For details: www.dioceseoffresno.org.
