Questioning an official for a call on one of his players against Buchanan High's Alex Fertig on Tuesday night, Clovis West coach Tom Orlich stood and asked with both politeness and firmness: "Was that a franchise foul?"
Whether it was or not, Orlich had given Fertig -- indeed the top-ranked Bears' franchise -- the most flattering compliment of the night in Buchanan's 64-57 Tri-River Athletic Conference victory over the No. 8 Golden Eagles.
Fertig, a senior guard, delivered everything one might expect and more of a four-year star in a meaningful game -- 30 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks -- as the Bears improved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Further, it wasn't just the numbers -- it was more about when they were applied.
For example:
Clovis West (13-4, 1-2), rallying behind Charlie Thompson's 15 third-quarter points and tightening up a man-to-man defense that has long been a signature of one of the state's winningest coaches all-time in Orlich, reduced a 12-point deficit to 46-43 in the final 3 minutes of the period.
Fertig, difficult to defend inside or out at 6 feet, 3 inches and 190 pounds, then feigned a drive from the top of the key, hit the brakes and buried a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer for a 49-43 lead.
Then, to begin the fourth, he scored on a rebound and made another 3-pointer after his own steal for a 54-43 advantage.
The Eagles wouldn't go away on a night that three-year veteran guard Thompson was spectacular on a variety of shots while scoring 26 points.
But the Fertig damage had been done.
"He's special," Bears coach Eric Swain said.
And Fertig has a four-year varsity mate of exceptional court presence in Swain's son, Ryan -- also a physical mismatch for many at 6-5, 210.
"The room spins when you're young," Swain said. "It moves slower for Alex and Ryan. You can't replace that experience."
