Sports briefs: Prigge, Yoho star for Bulldogs swim team

Hannah Prigge won the 3-meter diving, Dani Yoho the 50-yard freestyle and the Fresno State swimming team stood second after Day 1 of the Beach Cup, hosted by the University of San Diego.

Prigge had a score of 274.8 on the 3-meter, and Yoho was timed in 24.11.

The Bulldogs have 88 points and the hosts 107.

Fresno State's 200 medley relay of Alex Madsen, Britney Vogel, Rayanne Nguyen and Yoho was second in 1:49.29. San Diego won in 1:48.03.

Courtney Sheehan (5:11.59) and Lucy Titchin (5:12.88) finished 3-4 in the 500 free.

Pepperdine's Natalia Barragan (Chowchilla) was 14th in the 50 free.

Sunbirds swimmers too deep for Pioneers

Katelyn Brown led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50-yard freestyle and NAIA No. 1 Fresno Pacific used its superior depth to beat the host Cal State East Bay Pioneers 114-87 in women's swimming.

Brown won the 50 free in 26:06 with Kendall Swanson second and Courtney Fast third. Cheyenne Coffman took the 500 free (5:14.59), Swanson won the 200 breaststroke (2:28.25) and the 200 free relay placed first in 1:41.39 with Michelle Moreno, Brown, Stacy Carter and Coffman.

Wild drops Monsters in NAHL showdown

The Fresno Monsters failed to pick up ground on third-place Wenatchee with a 4-2 loss to the host Wild in North American Hockey League action.

Wenatchee increased its lead over fourth-place Fresno to six points with the teams concluding their brief two-game series today.

Fresno's Riley Borer opened scoring in the first period and Jeffrey Pauluk's power-play goal tied it 2-2 in the second before the Wild took charge.

Grizzlies' manager joins Hot Stove lineup

New Fresno Grizzlies manager Bob Mariano has been added to the lineup of guests for the team's annual Hot Stove banquet next Saturday at the Fresno Convention Center.

Mariano will join ex-major league pitcher Vida Blue, San Francisco Giants catcher Chris Stewart and Giants bullpen coach Mark Gardner (Clovis High/Fresno City College/Fresno State) on the dais.

Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m., with tickets -- $60 for adults, $40 for 12 and younger and $540 for a table of 10 -- available at (559) 320-4487.

Fuego's Cuevas earns spot in USL Pro league

Jose Cuevas, an All-Western Conference selection for the Fresno Fuego in 2011, will play this season with the Charleston Battery of the USL Pro league.

The Farmersville native had nine goals and two assists this past season for Fresno, which also is sending forward Tyler Reinhart and defender Araia Berhane to the USL Pro Combine starting Thursday in Bradenton, Fla.

Local boxers go 0-3

Fresno's Mike Ruiz (8-2-1) was stopped in the seventh round by Matthew Villanueva (7-0-1) of Burbank during their junior bantamweight boxing match at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Ruiz suffered a second-round knockdown but got back on his feet.

  • In Woodland Hills, the corner of Tulare welterweight Hector Alatorre (16-18) stopped his bout after the fourth of a scheduled six-rounder against unbeaten Alexander Filichkin (10-0). On the same card, Sanger's Claudia Amaro (1-1) lost a four-round decision to Celine Roman (2-0) at 126 pounds.

Clovis' Gaudaur earns national weekly honor

Arizona State's Alex Gaudaur (Clovis High) is the Collegiate Division national gymnast of the week, the College Gymnastics Association announced.

Gaudaur finished second in the all-around as the Sun Devils opened their season last week at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
