Sports briefs: Fresno's Ruiz to lead off Showtime bouts

Fresno fighter Mike Ruiz (8-1-1, three KOs) is scheduled to fight undefeated Matthew Villanueva of Burbank in an eight-round junior bantamweight bout that opens tonight's installment of Showtime's "ShoBox: The New Generation."

Villanueva is 6-0-1 with with six knockouts.

The fight is part of a card at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, with the main event featuring World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos facing Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Showtime's broadcast has an 11 p.m. delayed start on the West Coast.

  • Tulare's Hector Alatorre (16-17, five KOs) will box in his 34th career bout when he faces Alexander Filichkin (9-0) in Woodland Hills. Also on the card, Sanger's Claudia Amaro (1-0) takes on Celine Roman (1-0) at 126 pounds.

  • Aleman Boxing Fresno will have its first amateur show of the year at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Aleman Gym.

2 Fresno State fishing teams set for tourney

Fresno State has a pair of two-man teams entered in the National Guard FLW College Fishing tour stop Jan. 28 at Lake Shasta.

Joao Lopes and Demetri Filios, and Trey Kopacz and Shai Van Gelder will take part in the 40-team tournament that will award $5,000 to the winner.

It is one of four stops in the Western Division. The top five teams from each will qualify for the Western Regional, where the first-place team will win a boat painted in school colors.

The top five from each regional advance to nationals, where the winning team will get $25,000 for their school, $50,000 cash and a bass boat wrapped in school colors for their club.

Clovis High alum stars for ASU gymnastics

Arizona State junior gymnast Alex Gaudaur of Clovis was second in the all-around as the team opened its new season this past weekend at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Gaudaur, a graduate of Clovis High, helped the Sun Devils finish fourth.
