The Western Growers Foundation is working with the California Department of Education to award $1,000 grants to 100 preschools for edible gardens, the foundation announced.

Eight of the grants went to preschools in the central San Joaquin Valley.

The recipients are: Blossom Trails Preschool and Child Care (Sanger), Golden State YMCA (Visalia -- Mooney Boulevard), Golden State YMCA (Visalia -- Tulare Avenue), Hansel and Gretel Inc. (Fresno -- Wishon), Hansel and Gretel Inc. (Fresno -- Alamos), I-5 Social Services Corporation (Mendota), Kaweah Kids Center (Visalia) and Richgrove Child Development Program.

The project is being funded by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Western Growers Foundation said.

The grant will pay for plants, seeds and gardening equipment at preschools across California. The foundation will distribute its expert gardening guidebook, "Gardens for Learning."
