Nine Fresno-area players were selected to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass teams. Earning first-team junior honors was Edison quarterback Khari McGee (multi-purpose). First-team sophomore honorees included Edison running back Blake Wright (offense), Clovis defensive lineman Nick Nevills (defense) and Mendota running back/linebacker Edgar Segura (multi-purpose). Mission Oak tight end Kevin Palma and Fowler offensive lineman Kevin Sundberg and Clovis defensive lineman Jason Black were second-team juniors. Kingsburg offensive lineman Ryan Steele and Edison defensive lineman Brandon Wright were third-team juniors, while Clovis North defensive lineman Isiah Duran and Hanford quarterback Jake Young were second-team sophomores.
Monday's basketball highlights
-- Jake Martin scored 25 points as No. 8 Liberty-Bakersfield overcame No. 10 Mt. Whitney 57-55 in double overtime at the MLK Showcase at College of the Sequoias. The Pioneers, who held the Patriots to seven points in the fourth quarter while sending it to overtime, got 14 points from Will Nelson and 13 from Dannon Frigulti.
-- Chris Carter's 13 points led four Clovis East players in double-figure scoring during a 65-59 win over Tulare Western at the Showcase.
