  In response to the March 16 letter by Joseph Hryn: Social Security is an entitlement, and here's why.

  When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn credits that qualify you for benefits extended to older Americans, such as monthly Social Security payments and eligibility for Medicare. You must earn a certain number of credits to qualify for retirement benefits.

  Americans born in or after 1929 must have 40 credits to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits. Workers can earn a maximum of four credits per year, so it will take 10 years to earn the 40 credits required.

  I read the Jan. 29 article, "Valley ag leaders, Swearengin upbeat on Obama immigration plan." This article gives insight on President Obama's plan to provide citizenship to the 11 million illegal immigrants.

  That effort is challenging, but it will bring illegal immigrants into the light. Moreover, it will offer them opportunity to get jobs according to their talent, and it also helps to reduce exploitation by the employer. In addition, they can be hired legally and get the same wages according to the state or national government parameters. They will pay taxes, which will ultimately increase the government's income.

  The plan also provides adequate labor to the agriculture industry. It will prohibit employers from exploiting laborers and save them from punishment in case they are caught hiring illegally. It also reduces forgery and stealing of documentation.
