The Fresno City College men's basketball team held College of the Sequoias to 18 first-half points and never looked back in a 75-53 Central Valley Conference-opening victory Wednesday in Visalia.
Alex Perez and DeAndre Medlock each scored 10 points as the state No. 8-ranked Rams (17-3 overall) received offensive contributions from 12 players.
Troy Norris and Anthony Trammell scored 10 points apiece for the Giants (10-7).
Porterville men hold off West Hills
Anthony Hildalgo scored 30 points and Porterville held off a late rally to beat West Hills 74-70 to equal its win total from last year. The Pirates (8-8, 1-0) played without leading scorer Jason Carmichael (coach's decision). Michael Balogun led the Falcons (9-8, 0-1) with 18 points.
Porterville women top Feather River
Regine Mecenario scored 19 points as host Porterville downed Feather River 57-44 as part of the Golden Valley/Central Valley Conference women's crossover series. Maribel Bravo added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates (5-12), who limited the Golden Eagles (6-9) to 24.2% shooting. Siskiyous beat Porterville 70-35 Tuesday. Bravo scored 10 points.
Outlaws, champ Meyers set for Tulare track's opener
Two-time defending champion Jason Meyers of Clovis and the World of Outlaws series will headline the two-day season opener at Groppetti Automotive Thunderbowl Raceway.
The World of Outlaws will share the one-third-mile track in Tulare on March 16-17 with the USAC West Coast 360s.
The Golden State King of the West Series for winged 410 sprint cars and USAC West Coast 360s will run at the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial on April 14, the Pombo/Sargent Classic on May 12 and the inaugural John Anthony Sharp Memorial on June 2.
Also, the Rebel Winged 360s and IMCA Modifieds are set for April 28. The season concludes with the Trophy Cup: Oct. 18 for non-wing sprint cars; Oct. 19-20 for winged 360s.
Buchanan alum Barnes invited to U.S. rugby tryout
Local rugby player Tanner Barnes will try out for the USA under-20 national team in San Francisco this weekend.
Barnes, a former Buchanan High football safety and running back, was invited after helping lead Central Washington's sevens squad as a freshman to the inaugural College Rugby 7s Championships and a runner-up finish.
Barnes started playing rugby last year for Buchanan's club team. He was team MVP after its second-place finish in the Central California Youth Rugby League.
OT goal provides Cup sweep for Caruthers
The under-14 Caruthers Youth Soccer League boys and girls swept their age groups at the recent Founders Cup in Ripon, with Sierra Martinez scoring the winning goal in overtime of the decisive match for the girls.
Martinez's goal was the decider in a 3-2 victory over Manteca in the final, and CYSL became the first program to sweep a Founders Cup age group.
