Fresno police arrested eight people for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during a DUI operation Friday night in southeast Fresno.

In addition to the arrests, police impounded 24 vehicles belonging to drivers who were either arrested for DUI or who were driving without a valid license, Sgt. Robert Dewey said.

Over the past week, officers with nearly two dozen police agencies in Fresno and Madera counties have arrested 68 people as part of a Valleywide anti-DUI effort, with some departments still to report their results. A DUI checkpoint will be held in Fresno sometime this weekend, and extra DUI patrols are planned in Clovis, Madera, Selma, Sanger, Kerman and other rural communities during the holiday weekend.

The California Highway Patrol is launching its maximum enforcement period today; all of the CHP's available officers will be patrolling freeways and county roads on the lookout for suspected drunken drivers.
