The basics: Dewayne Stewart, 51, is a pastor at Feed My Sheep Ministries in Fresno. He has three children, sons who live in Riverside and Fresno and a daughter who lives in Fresno.
What he does: Stewart repairs bicycles with volunteers as part of Feed My Sheep's Stop The Violence Bike Repair Ministry at the Villa Margaritas apartment complex in east-central Fresno. He also organizes a Bible study for the children living in the apartment complex and surrounding area.
Why he does it: "Coming up as a young man, I had nobody to steer me in the right direction," Stewart said. "Now I can be somebody to steer these children in the right direction."
Turning point: In late August 2009, a 20-year-old man was shot and killed on the sidewalk near Villa Margaritas, prompting management to reach out to a number of organizations to help tenants and their children cope. "Of all of the ministries, the bicycle ministry survived," Stewart said.
Details, details: Stewart and Feed My Sheep Ministries has served Villa Margaritas, at Olive and Recreation avenues, since Sept. 5, 2009. As a tenant himself, Stewart and other volunteers are able to repair children's bicycles while also holding Bible studies, tracking kids' academic improvement and improving nearby Carozza Park as part of the city's Adopt-a-Park program.
