The basics: Sereniti Scott, 17, is a senior at Clovis West High who takes morning classes at the Center for Advanced Research and Technology. She is a track athlete who finished eighth in the Central Section last year in the 300-meter hurdles competing for Central High, and plans to compete this spring for Clovis West. She plans to attend San Francisco State next fall and major in theater.
What she does: In September, Scott founded the Rock Your Socks Foundation. The goal: To distribute 999 pairs of socks to Fresno homeless by Christmas.
And not just any socks. Scott prefers colored socks with patterns. "I absolutely love socks, and colorful, bright socks make you bright and happy," she said.
To distribute the socks to those who need them most, Scott and family members drive downtown, park near the Fresno Rescue Mission and hand them out from the back of an SUV.
Why she does it: Scott's eyes were opened by a year living in Pennsylvania, where she says the homeless problem is more noticeable than in the Valley.
"A lot of people in Fresno have a wall up, like they choose not to be aware," she said. "It was way wrong of me not to know how hard life is for some people."
Turning point: Four years ago, Scott handed out her first socks -- an 8-pack -- to a homeless man living in Santa Cruz. "He was really ecstatic, and it made me feel good, even though it's just a few pairs of socks." That act planted the seed, she said.
Details, details: Scott started by donating 34 pairs of her own socks, then convinced family members, fellow CART students and a sock company called Pro Feet to donate several hundred more. She only accepted new socks or used ones in good condition without holes. As of last week, Scott had collected 972 pairs.
What others say: "This is something Sereniti decided to do completely on her own," said Phillis Williams of Fresno, Scott's grandmother. "She really just wants to help."
How you can help: The Rock Your Socks Foundation is still accepting donations. Socks can be mailed to CART (2555 Clovis Ave., Clovis CA 93612) or dropped off at the collection box there.
