The basics: Larry Kong, 58, is a medication delivery man for Sacramento Overnight. He is married to Kim Kong, and has two young children.

What he does: Kong has worked with Habitat for Humanity to help build many of the houses in his southwest Fresno neighborhood. He also acts as a Cambodian translator for Habitat for Humanity meetings. Every year, he helps lead the Habitat for Humanity cleanups in his neighborhood. He also helps his neighbors with their yard chores, especially those who cannot do the work themselves.

Why he does it: "If your neighborhood looks good, then you feel good," Kong said. "If it's full of trash, then you feel bad. I love the plants and the flowers. If Habitat plants all these plants and flowers and no one takes care of them, then that's no good. Some people just don't care, but someone needs to take care of them."

Turning point: Eight years ago, a friend recommended that Kong participate in Habitat for Humanity. After working with the program for four months, the group selected Kong to get his own Habitat house. "If Habitat didn't help me then, I wouldn't be able to have my own house," he said.

Details, details: Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization that helps people with little money build their own home. Many of the houses in Kong's neighborhood were built by the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. The group assists people in need who have the ability to pay the mortgage and a willingness to help build their home.

What others say: "Larry is excellent, 100%. He mows my lawn. He checks on me and brings me vegetables. We maintain a close relationship. I think it's a great thing he does, because he cares about his community," said Henry Scantling, 71, the former leader of the Neighborhood Watch group in Kong's neighborhood.

How you can help: Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers who can help build houses, stock Habitat's warehouse or organize projects in the community. To volunteer, call Joan Cook at (559) 237-4102.
